I choose to invoke the names Indus and Ganges, instead of, say, Pakistan and India… But for me, Indus and Ganges put the issue at hand in an appropriate framework of space and time. A new framework indeed, but one where the events of the last half century are only a small bend in a majestic and continuing journey of some ten thousand years

 

For many outsiders, as well as those within, the feeling of affinity, a sense of identity and oneness appears to be weak or lacking among the people. The task before them appears to be based on parochial and narrow lanes rather than the preservation and enhancement of a wholly Indian identity which depends upon the relevance of Indian history, its amalgamated cultural values and commitment of its people to the goals and objectives enshrined in the preservation of this identity.

 

The hate and intolerance by fanatic sections of the Hindus and Muslims, has failed to create a cohesive Indian nationhood has envisaged by Indian leaders like Gandhi, Nehru, Azad, Nanak, Tagore and Iqbal.

 

Sadly, however, the two principal communities refused to strive for a national identity from a common platform. Choosing instead to view themselves in a narrow religious divisions. Religious riots, which blind them to this day, posed a further obstacle to the promotion of national unity.

 

It was forgotten that national identity evolves, and that is not fabricated, The Indian identity was already there…
